Comments De eerste zaak van Montalbano

  1. I had previously read only the title story in a one story volume About 125 pages So you can imagine that the remaining pages and other 20 stories comprises a large element of this complete book. The other great aspect is that we have an introduction from the author himself about his writing and how he captures his detective and what he writes. The work of the translater, Stephen Sartarelli, also deserves special mention s he brings a real humanityto the work and where Italian doesn t quite have a [...]

  2. The novella s title refers to Salvo Montalbano s first case after his promotion to chief inspector at Vig ta, which involves an illiterate young girl thought to have tried to assassinate a judge But Salvo soon realizes there s much to the case than meets the eye.Author Andrea Camilleri packs a lot into the book s 97 pages, which readers new to the series will appreciate However, longtime fans will be amused at how the maverick Montalbano begins his tenure with his typical disregard for rules an [...]

  3. This prequel to the wonderful Inspector Montalbano mystery series by Andrea Camilleri will be read eagerly by all his fans, and is a great starting point for those who have yet to read any of the books In it, we see a young Montalbano when he first arrives in Vigata We get to see him choosing his home We get to see him finding all the best restaurants in which to eat and learning to work with the rest of the staff in the police station and a journalist at the local television station We watch hi [...]

  4. I wanted to get a taste of Inspector Montalbano without reading the first novel in the series, and this collection of short stories was probably the best choice, despite a few of them being of a lesser value, and one of them definitely a fuck up.At first, I was reluctant I m not a fan of the Italian movies or stories with the Mafia Cosa Nostra, Ndrangheta, Camorra, Stidda, Sacra Corona Unita, and whatnot , nor am I familiar with any Italian police procedural La Piovra wasn t exactly a police pro [...]

  5. Montalbanos First Case Other StoriesIf you enjoy Andrea Camilleri s detective Inspector Montalbano, then this book is for you, even if the stories will be familiar to those who have watched the TV series This is also Camilleri s personal anthology of those short stories, and all readers are treated to the rich prose and imagery that he uses, that is even better than the views one gets from the television series. From Salvo s first case when he had not yet been appointed to Vigata and was about to [...]

  6. This novella 97 pages according to is a prequel to the international bestselling Inspector Montalbano series It was available on Net Galley, so I received my copy on my Kindle Thank you, Net Galley According to the reviews on , Salvo Montalbano is thirty five years old and still a bit naive and there are plenty of criminals ready to take advantage of his inexperience I didn t detect any naivety in Montalbano at all, except, perhaps, he didn t pay close enough attention to his father s advice not [...]

  10. This is a straight up Montalbano story without the self referential nonsense that has marred some of the recent books in the Montalbano series It is as if by writing about the early Montalbano, Camilleri was able to regain the direct freshness of the earlier novels.Montalbano has just received his promotion to inspector and transferred to Vigata, much to his delight And already he has his fine sense of justice which sometimes causes him to bend the rules beyond all recognition And he has begun t [...]

  11. The level of the short stories varies, but the collection is still delightful and very much fun to read.

  12. Like a comfy old pair of slippers i just love hanging out with montalbano and cat , and the stories are almost incidental.

  14. The only thing holding me back from a 5 star review of this collection is Camilleri s uneven handling of male and female characters He brings so much complexity to the various men in the stories, but women show up much less often and with far less depth When they do appear, they re mostly victims, schemers or very peripheral characters well past the age of fertility Livia comes the closest to an intelligent female character who contributes some things beyond mere sex, but even she shows up mostl [...]

  15. Loved it This is a collection of stories, which I generally wouldn t read, but the prose is so eloquent and the characterizations of the Sicilians, each twisted and crafty than the next, is fascinating My new favorite passage in all literature comes from Montalbano Says No This is not a spoiler because Camilleri writes it in his preface and it is still a surprise to see how he fitted into that story the inspector makes a late night phone call to me, his author, in which he tells me in no uncer [...]

  17. This is not the first collection of short stories and a novella or two of the crafty and ingenious detective The first story is how he came to Vigata the other stories are not in chronological order nor can they except for Mimi s affairs , references to Beba, and then their son be placed in the chronology of the novel length mysteries Camilleri has the ability to write with humor and wit the two are not the same and at the same time with great humanity towards certain of the characters While not [...]

  18. A generous helping of stories, all as promised involving Montalbano, some of which date from before he met Livia and before he became Inspector at Vigata We learn how he came to his ideal house on the beach at Marinella, and how unhappy he was at his earlier assignment in the mountains where he returns on a vacation with Livia he s still not crazy about them Some of the 21 stories will attract you than others I loved Catarella solves a case but it s a delightful collection, as usual translated [...]

  19. I enjoyed this book much than I expected When I realized that it was a collection of stories, I thought that I would only like the fist case and maybe one or two other stories especially when I saw that some of the 21 stories in the book were only a couple of pages long I was pleasantly surprised I enjoyed every story in the collection I thought it was a nice way to get familiar with Montalbano, from the 4 or so books that I had read previously.

  21. I love all the main montalbano novels I rate them highly and devour them when they come out. However this one was disappointing Montalbano first case is good as are some of the other short stories But at least half of the short stories are not good and really I wish I hadn t read them Montalbano s are so much better than this selection Stick to the main novels.

  22. There are writers and then there is Andrea Camilleri One of the best short story collection I have read in a long long time Not all the stories can be marked as straight thrillers, actually mot of them can be taken down as non thrillers with Montalbano in them But, each of them are a treat to read One of the best birthday gifts I have had in a long time.

  24. AwesomeThe writing is spectacular, showing a knowledge of the human spirit and all of its foibles, betrayals, and tragedies paralleled by the greatest of writers The difference between Camilleri and other great writers He laces all of this understanding with real humor.

  25. I have enjoyed Camilleri s mysteries every bit as much as Agatha Christie s books This volume was very long It went on and on, but the stories were engaging so it was a pleasure to read.
