Comments Paris Versus New York: A Tally of Two Cities

  1. If you like modern graphic design that tends to be on the humorous side, you may like this Stereotypes accurate or not and art seem to mesh together quite well The references are alright As clich d as it sounds, it was nice to see my favourite film Am lie mentioned It definitely brings back memories of time spent in each city.

  2. This is a cute picture book with fun graphics and barely any words It s the type of book that would make a nice gift or something fun to browse through in the doctor s waiting room or whatever, but not necessarily worth buying for oneself I ve lived in New York and have visited Paris It was nice to experience some nostalgia and smile at all the memories.

  10. I might be that one person who has never seen Muratyan s blog prior to purchasing this book The book came to my attention at the recommendation of another All I was told was that it was a blogger s interpretation of Paris and New York City and how his comparison between the two cities Having visited both cities previously, I was intrigued I picked up the book at a local independent bookshop that had the text featured next to the cash register I still had no idea what I was in for as the cashier [...]

  11. What I found most intriguing about this book was that I have been to Paris, but never New York, and yet I recognized of the locations in The Big Apple Could this be that my love for 30 Rock and How I Met Your Mother has caused me to know about a city than actually visiting I was depressed at first, but then I remembered what I learned on my trip to Paris If you see a bum sleeping in a Metro station around 9 am, he will still be there sleeping when you get off at that station around 10 pm Ahhh [...]

  13. When you combine two of the most historical and breathtaking cities in the world what do you get Hmm Paris Versus New York of course An unusual book it is, mainly because it requires a lot of chuckling, and as it turns out it s quite the information polestar Author Vahram Muratyan, a Paris native, created a very visual comparison of the two cities From monumental buildings, exquisite food habits, notable figures, to saturated clich s about the people who inhabit these two magnificent cities Alth [...]

  14. This is yet another blog to book stuff, which rely on solid, colorful, visual Nearly every visual was already posted in Muratyan blog, but for traditional reader like me, it s always different if you see them printed on papers Muratyan first got the idea for the blog while sitting in the New York subway, watching the train entered the darkened tunnel and people walked past hurriedly In the book s introduction, it is stated that The universal appeal these two cultural capitals have takes me by su [...]

  15. This book is amazing Especially for anyone studying design and who knows what diagrams are The images are spectacular and carry the message perfectly It is in French, but even if you don t speak the language you will be able to understand what the message is I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in city planning organization Even if you are just interested in comparing the two cities through history and layout and culture It is an interesting book and expecially valuable to th [...]

  16. This came across my desk at work and I spent an enjoyable twenty minutes flipping through it The premise is simple a graphic illustration of a concept as seen in Paris and as seen in New York For example, one spread shows a cut out of a pigeon, the subtitle reading rat volant and on the opposite page is a cut out of a rat, its subtitle reading wingless pigeon I mostly liked it from a sociological point of view, how the same object, i.e a cup of coffee, can be seen differently via a cultural pers [...]

  18. Memories A great book for those who have visited or would like love to visit the title cities Muratyan manages to say a lot by pairing his simple graphics with short, snappy phrases It s fun seeing the City of Lights and the Big Apple lay side by side or sometimes superimposed on one another It s all clean lines and rich color Have fun reminiscing I did I especially loved le restaurant It s soooo effing true

  19. Since the last review where I mentioned the yearly reading challenge went over so well, I figured I should read another short book I put read in quotation marks since this book consists of illustrations contrasting Paris and New York It s sometimes amusing, but it takes 10 minutes to go through so I went through it all in Strand bookstore Maybe it s hypocritical to give this 2 stars while I gave DFW s speech This is Water 5 stars, but at least the latter was words.

  20. An authentic Beau Livre for travelers, art lovers, Paris and NY lovers Although all the illustrations are great, funny and meaningful as done by a French graphic designer I was expecting some kind of analysis and insight about the two cities from his point of view But I was disappointed to realize there is quite no text in this book, except for the short introduction and the image titles and excerpts So I m still looking for that kind of book about Paris vs other great cities.

  21. Paris Versus New York is a witty graphic design book that is perfect for anyone who loves either The City of Lights or The Big Apple Muratyan s artwork originally appeared on his blog, but became so popular, that he turned it into an entire book This little guy is the perfect small coffee table book that every apartment needs If you fall in love with these pictures like I did, check out Muratyan s website and order some larger prints of your favorites.

  22. it doesn t happen often I hear the library announce they will close in 15 minutes, Im rushing to the self check out and I see this little book on the shelf Paris vs New York I m thinking someone is going to give a semi serious look at both cities and tell stories about the differences Not I m wasn t aware of Vahram Mutatyan or his blog before I grabbed the book, but I just feel like a book shouldn t just appeal to a narrow audience, like at least for me, this book would.

  23. I think this book is absolutely wonderful It shows the interesting comparisons between Parisian culture and New Yorker culture I loved the content that the author uses for the pictures and I also just loved the style of the pictures themselves Yes, this book isn t a literary book it is mostly an artistic representation of these two wonderful cities.

  24. As a native of one city and familiar with the other, I found this interesting and food for thought I would have like discusssion, however It was a collection of graphics contrasting one city against the other, which was fun but somehow felt incomplete I enjoyed it but wished it had been built out a little .

  25. If ever you need a break from reading, pick this up for a look through some amazing graphics and some humorous visuals chronicling the comparisons between Paris and New York The simplicity of the images and the bright colours used provided a great aesthetic for the book I really enjoyed this book, especially the great graphics and was a fun read.

  26. This book is a creative visual look at two amazing cities New York City Paris Each page contains graphic design esque illustrations that compare two facets of both cities Since I ve been to both cities, it actually brought back lots of memories besides it being an entertaining read Wish I could speak read better French I d probably get out of it Great nonetheless.
