  1. Who would have thought that my first 5 star rating of the year would go to a HR book Come to think of it, I don t think I ve ever given 5 stars to any Historical Romance before A testament to how brilliant I found Like No Other Lovers to be and how I thoroughly enjoyed it It was absolutely hilarious, the characters were solid, their chemistry sparked Is this how Julie Anne Long normally writes Then I would soon horde her books She has this kind of flourish writing style It was overall beautiful [...]

  2. I absolutely adore Like No Other Lover, the second book in the Pennyroyal Green series There s a clever story filled with both humor and poignancy, a hero and heroine whose sexual chemistry is off the charts, and a beautiful, hard earned happily ever after I honestly can t ask for .So, so good

  3. It takes some pretty impressive writing to make me eventually like a character that I started out truly hating And, being this is the second book in a series where I wasn t exactly all that thrilled with the first heroine in the beginning, I wonder if this is a pattern. In this one, we have Cynthia, a girl who was the belle of the ball in London but then was dropped by everyone after causing a scandal You will hate her guts when you first meet her She is shallow, vain, catty, manipulative, and ca [...]

  4. 4 Solid Stars This was by far one of the funniest historicals I ve read in some time I did find myself suddenly laughing a few times throughout the book This was such a heartwarming story, yes it was a bit wordy and long winded at times, but it definitely makes for better insight into the characters At first I didn t care very much for Cynthia but as the story goes on I definitely begin to understand and feel for her Another great read by Long

  5. The heroine was such a bitch Seriously I absolutely hated her with every fibre of my being She represented everything I hated in a heroine frivolous, stuck up, manipulative, opportunistic and shallow God, she was so mean I wanted to throw a chair at her.Okay, I get it She was an orphan She came from poverty and was determined to better her position BUT SERIOUSLY WOULD IT KILL HER TO BE NICER HER THOUGHTS WERE DOWNRIGHT MEAN FOR PETE S SAKE AM I THE ONLY ONE BOTHERED BY THAT And oh it didn t help [...]

  6. Sheer perfection Just a straight character driven love story no villains, murders to solve, lost heirs or heiresses to find or discover, no evil plots to foil, no useless brothers to support exactly what I want in a romance The entire story takes place over 2 weeks at a house party at the wealthy Redmonds country house in Pennyroyal Green Both the hero and heroine want to be engaged at the end of the 2 weeks, basically for financial gain, but not to each other, because she is broke and he is not [...]

  7. These people are idiots with all the empathy of particularly limp carrots And I can t, for the life of me, see why either would have anything to do with the other Okay, so she s hot and he s rich and handsome, but the book tells us Miles has his pick of hot people he can actually have sex with and she has had her pick of the best of society for years, apparently, so it s not like either has any reason to pay any particular attention to the other At half way in, they ve barely spoken beyond very [...]

  8. Reviewed for queuemyreview book release Nov08Yippee Now I have yet another author to add to my watch list I just finished Julie Anne Long s latest historical Like No Other Lover and I ll be heading to the store shortly looking for her backlist If you ve been reading my reviews, then you know I don t throw out superlatives like confetti, but this book was so very, very good When I m ten pages in thinking I ll never like the heroine and then end up cheering for her, you know the author is a talent [...]

  9. A wonderful romance JAL really knows how to write about deep passions as well as how to explore the art of falling in love It really is her strength as a writer This novel introduces us to Miles, heir apparent of a very wealthy family, and the destitute Cynthia The story centers around a house party at Mile s family home The story starts off a bit slow, as Cynthia reviews all of the eligable men as possible husbands Miles denies his feeling for her and instead sets his eye on a woman who his fat [...]

  10. I don t normally like house party stories where all the action is so contained over a few days, but it worked for me here I am a sucker for the than meets the eye beauty trope, and the warm up between Cynthia and Miles is really fun Cynthia s wicked drinking game had me giggling like mad some of the imagery is just hilarious Like this part about the feather on Lady Windermere s listing turban The plume of it now extended horizontally, and whenever she turned her head just a little, it inserted [...]

  11. 4.5 stars She supposed he meant why are you here Because her mind answered with Because I love you, and damn you for it You have both made my life worth living and utterly ruined it, and I m grateful that you did There is really no denying now I love this series and author She writes beautifully, creating amazing characters and stories and injecting them with just enough of humor I mean really, gotta admire someone who can go from writing something as heart breaking as the previous quote to Oh, [...]

  12. 5 stars notwithstanding the unladylike guffaws that the book elicited making me sound like one of her quirky characters the one who sounded like angry donkeys mating, haw haw haw I love to write a review while I still feel the afterglow of having raced to the finish of an unputownable romance I chose to wait this one out as I wanted to stand under the overcast cloud of feel goodness before it burst into a torrent of words that I know I should have held on to instead of spraying everyone with a t [...]

  13. What a delightful and entertaining book and exactly what I needed to pull me out of my serious emotional heart heavy book reading funk that I have been in Big 4 stars Falling in love with Cynthia Brightly is the most fashionable thing for London s most eligible bachelors to do for the past two Season s She is beautiful and charming and has suddenly ran out of time to secure her future She has no family and only a few pounds to her name and sets her sights on the Redmonds house party to catch her [...]

  14. I decided to reread this series because my dearest UM finally started it This is the second book in Julie Anne Long s Pennyroyal Green series about the Eversea and Redmond families and it s one of my favorite historical romance series of all time This book is one of the standouts in the whole series for me I originally rated it 4 stars, but on rereading it, I bumped it up to 5 I never reviewed it for some reason, so now I am.I love this book It s an example of exactly why I like this author so m [...]

  15. This book contained Long s signature great writing, strong characters and secondary characters, and a fairly decent plot But I didn t connect to either the hero or heroine I felt that both were too cold and calculating for each other, and the hero would have been better off marrying the woman that his father wanted him to It seems in romance that heroes that we label today as autistic or as having Asperger s Syndrome can describe the hero, as in his having a mild form of those symptoms I don t k [...]

  16. This is my favorite, favorite Pennyroyal Green book, not because these characters are my best beloved although they are marvelous , not because the plot is excellent although it is , but because of one thing the shooting scene The shooting scene is, in my opinion, one of the FUNNIEST passages in English literature.Miles Redmond was the somewhat strange, scholarly second son of the Redmond clan, not much to notice He s something to do with bugs, isn t he , scenery than seen I ADORE Long s clever [...]

  17. This one actually kept my guessing regarding whether or not I was going to like it I started out laughing, which was good because Ms Long was obviously shooting for humor There were two parts in this book that had me laughing so hard I actually had to stop reading for a few minutes to get myself under control The drinking game was hilarious I did worry, however, that I was going to hate the heroine She was so completely mercenary and cold, but as you get to know her, you realize she s only doing [...]

  18. I am done I did not like this book The last 50 to 60 pages were the best of the book The hero Miles and the heroine Cynthia were likeable but the pacing was so slow and the way the book was written was like reading a menu at a steak house The same thing served up various ways The house party setting was boring, the secondary characters were boring and for the life of me after reading several of these books I want to find out why Lyon the penultimate son has disappeared and why should the reader [...]

  19. Like No Other Lover3 StarsWhile the hero and heroine are engaging and their romance is intense, the pacing is tediously slow until the last 30% and the phrasing is repetitious The seemingly selfish and mercenary Cynthia Brightly is in dire straights and nothing short of marriage to a man of means can save her from a life of destitution Enter Miles Redmond who has all the inside information on every eligible bachelor in Pennyroyal Green and is willing to trade it for a kiss from the one woman who [...]

  20. There s a scene during a card game that had me laughing so hard I had to stop reading to collect myself The H h are just great and I adored them both First time reading this author and I ll have to see what else she s got out there.

  21. 3.5 starsLoved it for the most part and absolutely adored Long s writing style, which means I will read books from her soon I had some issues with the hero s actions at some point or rather his lack of action but he made up for it eventually I loved the heroine however I always admire strong, decisive people, who won t spend their time lamenting but planning and acting A difficult premise for some, the mercenary heroine, but I think it was executed flawlessly here And thank god, no clenching va [...]

  22. 3.5 No woman ever caught Miles Redmond attention for other reason than a good time in bed Until the day he met HER Cynthia Brightly But right away, he hear her talking about possible suitors with a friend and cruelly dismiss him as a prospect She doesn t know he heard, she doesn t know him and she doesn t care either He s not wealthy nor popular, so he s uninteresting in her eyes That was two years ago Now everyone in London dropped her, her engagement was broken and you ll have to wait before k [...]

  23. 4.5 stars This is my first read of Julie Anne Long s work and absolutely loving it OK honestly I didn t like the book at first, because I was thinking Why on earth would a man still want a devastatingly beautiful woman when all she cares is money and title plus the plot was boring.Beauty is only on the surface and I hate the fact that vanity is a high priority in every single person And it is true that beautiful handsome people always have the upperhand I once proposed during a class debate that [...]

  24. This is the second book in Long s Pennyroyal Green series, but the hero is from the family feuding with the family in the first book of the series Because I d read the first book, it took me some mental adjusting for a chapter or two to get myself oriented But that s just me.The hero is the scientifically minded second son, who has become the presumed heir because his older brother has disappeared Dad wants him to get married, and has picked out the girl Hero wants to go back to Lacao, which is [...]

  25. Julie Anne Long continues to confuse me Why is this a series They are vaguely related at best We have had a bumpy relationship It was love at first sight with To Love a Thief and a decent second date with The Runaway Duke We nearly broke up after The Perils of Pleasure and got back together after What I Did For a Duke I tentatively accepted this fifth date and it was a delight but the spark was somehow missing I actually almost didn t route for Cynthia and Miles and that s terrible On the plus s [...]

  26. Thinking back on my rating of this book, I decided to take down one star, because it really is my least favorite Julie Anne Long book to the day It still is much, much better than the average romance and Julie Anne Long is my favorite writer, but I think I let the wonderful writing deceive me into giving a higher rating than I should have I can t praise the writing enough, I loved the ending another reason for my initial 5 star rating , but the pace wasn t even, which means I didn t enjoy all pa [...]

  27. Immediately, I disliked Cynthia entirely I thought, please tell me this is NOT the heroine And Miles, to feel love at first sight for this witch Please BUT by the second chapter I was all in for the two of them, hook, line and sinker sigh Julie Ann Long s writing drew me in, made me feel everything they were feeling I love when a book can actually make me laugh out loud and cry a bit view spoiler When she shot the marble penis off the statue I thought I was going to fall on the floor laughing I [...]

  28. Amazing Ah mazing I laughed so hard I cried several times reading thisI m talking specifically of the shooting party and the drinking game can we all say oh Mr Redmond You re so interesting And after all those tears from laughing, I cried tears of heartbreak later on when Cynthia railed at Miles for tricking her with false information about Mr Goodkin and she finally told him why it was so important for her to find someone to marry Then I cried again when Miles told her he d make it right with L [...]

  29. Julie Ann Long had me hooked as soon as I saw Pig and Thistle on Pennyroyal Green on the first page I absolutely loved Perils of Pleasure , so to see her make a hero of one of the hated Redmonds from that story is an added plus I loved Miles from the beginning his thought processes are terrific but it took me a while to warm up to Cynthia figured there had to be a lot to her character background than you see at the beginning That first kiss wow And who knew a simple reel could be so erotic.

  30. Complex characterization, LOL moments, weepy moments, a sexy hero wearing spectacleswhat s not to love
